Maurice, please let us know if this fixes the problem.  It should
because, if I remember correctly, dynamic registration with the
listener doesn't happen until the database is mounted.  That's
probably not the right terminology.  The effect is, the listener
doesn't pass connections to an instance using dynamic registration
until the instance is in mount state.

So, since duplicating a database with rman requires the auxiliary to
be nomount, you're stuck with either running rman from the auxiliary
server (and using a local connection) or putting a static entry in
listener.ora as Justis suggests.

The first doesn't work because rman is trying to go through the
listener, and the second does work because it is bypassing the
listener with a local connection.
